St. Louis, MO — July 23, 2019 — While the conversation about race and police-community relations is front page news in America, five St. Louis City and County officers profiled in Of Black and Blue: The Journey of African American Police work to affect positive change in their own communities.
In the five years since the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer sparked demonstrations, a militarized response by law enforcement, and international media attention, regions across the country have been grappling with issues of police-community relations. Nine examines this subject through the eyes of African American police officers, provides historical context, and shares perspectives of how to move forward in this one-hour special.
“It’s my hope this project will broaden the context of public discourse around relations between law enforcement and the African American community. It was an honor to have these current and retired officers entrust their stories to me. I consider Of Black and Blue the most significant work I’ve ever produced,” says Ruth Ezell, senior producer, Nine Network.
Nine will host a public screening of the film on Monday, July 29, at 7:00 p.m. in the Public Media Commons. The public is encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating. The screening is free, but registration is required at nineNet.org/OfBlackAndBlue.
The broadcast premiere is Monday, August 5, 7:00 p.m., on Nine PBS.
