Great Performances “Broadway’s Best”

Great Performances returns with its third annual “Broadway’s Best” lineup of acclaimed theatrical productions, premiering Sundays in November. This fall’s lineup spotlights musicals, comedy and drama. Watch these programs during broadcast or on the PBS Video App. Nine members can stream all five productions beginning November 1 on Nine Passport.

42nd Street
Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m.

The 1981 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, 42nd Street is the American dream fable of Broadway. Fresh-off-the-bus Peggy Sawyer gets her shot at the top when the leading lady gets injured. The musical is set to a score of iconic songs, including “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money,” and the showstopping title song.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I
Sunday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m.

This critically acclaimed 2015 production of the classic 1951 musical went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival. Based on a true story, nothing has prepared British schoolteacher Anna for the lessons a rich and complicated new land has to teach her or for the powerful connection she will forge with the imperious, but conflicted, King of Siam.

Sunday, November 17 at 3:00 p.m.

Alfred Molina reprises his acclaimed performance as the American abstract expressionist painter Mark
Rothko in Red. Amid the growing competitive presence of a new generation of artists, Rothko takes on his greatest career challenge yet: to create a series of paintings for the the architect Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Seagram Building.

Much Ado About Nothing
Sunday, November 24 at 2:30 p.m.

Set in contemporary Georgia with an election race underway, Much Ado About Nothing finds the community of Messina celebrating a break from an ongoing war, but not all is peaceful amid the merriment. Former rivals battle it out, revenge is sought, and trickery runs amok in this timeless comedy of romantic retribution and miscommunication. The play was recorded during its final weekend of New York’s Free Shakespeare in the Park in June 2019.

Kinky Boots
Membership special on Friday, November 29 at 8:00 p.m.

Kinky Boots is the 2013 Broadway blockbuster with music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Tony-winning theater legend Harvey Fierstein that went on to pick up a Tony, a Grammy and London’s Olivier Award. Based on true events, this bighearted hit tells the story of two people with nothing in common—or so they think. Charlie is a British shoe factory owner struggling to save his family business. Lola is a fabulous nightclub entertainer with a wildly exciting idea. The unexpected duo learns to embrace their differences and create a line of sturdy, stiletto-heeled boots for an entirely new clientele. But, their most meaningful achievement is their friendship.
