Beloved St. Louis public affairs show celebrates three decades of polite conversation on the issues
St. Louis, MO — January 5, 2017 — The arrival of 2017 means that the Nine Network’s Donnybrook has officially brought fans “polite conversation on the issues” for 30 years. Founded in 1987 by St. Louis media legend Martin Duggan, the show is one of the longest running local public affairs talk shows on public television. A special, one-hour broadcast will take place on January 5 at 7 p.m. featuring a look back at memorable Donnybrook moments and congratulations from notable St. Louisans.
For three decades, community media pillars have been convening around the roundtable at the Nine Network to discuss the issues that matter most to St. Louisans. Alvin Reid and Wendy Wiese join founding panelists Ray Hartman of St. Louis Magazine and Bill McLellan of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch most Thursday evenings, along with lead “provocateur” Charlie Brennan of KMOX.
“Donnybrook has been a mainstay of Nine Network programming for nearly half of our history,” said President and CEO Jack Galmiche, “and it has no doubt played a significant role in making us one of the most watched public television stations in the country.”
It was the vision of longtime Globe-Democrat columnist Martin Duggan to form an ideologically disparate panel of media personalities to hash out local issues. The show was given a 13-week trial by KETC in 1987, and was continued as a response to popular demand. Mr. Duggan held the position of moderator for nearly 1,200 shows, until Mr. Brennan took over in 2010.
The group also hosts the Nine Network’s wildly popular annual live broadcast and reception, DonnyBash, which never fails to draw large crowds of Nine Network members and loyal fans. As a part of the yearlong celebration of Donnybrook’s 30th Anniversary, an additional chance to meet the cast, DonnyFest, has been added to the calendar for June 24th. More details on that event are forthcoming.
