Foundation Dollars Go to Support American Graduate Community Engagement Initiative

St. Louis, MO — July 14, 2015 — The Nine Network of Public Media received a $15,000 grant from the St. Louis-based Deaconess Foundation designed to support the station’s American Graduate high-school student internships and Nine Lab storytelling classes.

The grant was one of several the Foundation made in June. Deaconess invested in a wide range of St. Louis-area organizations to improve systems and encourage policies that enhance child well-being. The grants totaled more than half a million dollars to 30 projects.

American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen is a public media initiative being led locally and nationally by the Nine Network. It involves 80 public television and radio stations and more than 1,400 community partners in 30 states across America. Locally, more than 50 community partners are working with the Nine Network. The goal of the initiative is to improve educational outcomes for all children and to achieve a national graduation rate of 90 percent by 2020.

The Deaconess Foundation grant will enable the Nine Network to hire high school students as interns. Additionally, the grant will fund Nine Lab classes to teach high school students how to use video to tell stories that motivate other young people to graduate.
